On 11 July 2025, our social entrepreneurs came together for the Digital Advancement Workshop led by Christoff Oosthuysen, founder of DigiBiz.Africa, in collaboration with Social Enterprise Connect and the Social Enterprise Academy South Africa.

The webinar focused on helping social entrepreneurs assess their digital readiness and build practical Digital Progression Plans using the MyDigiScore tool.

Here are 5 key takeaways from the session:

1. Know Where You Are Before You Plan Where to Go

Participants began the session by completing the MyDigiScore digital readiness assessment. This helped them identify their current position on the digital journey — from digitisation (basic digital use) to full digital transformation. Most social enterprises scored between 22% and 72%, revealing great potential for growth.

2. Digital Solutions Must Address Real Challenges

Instead of chasing the latest tech, Christoff encouraged participants to first identify the core challenges in their businesses and then explore which digital tools can address them. Whether it’s brand visibility, fundraising, or team communication — the solution should match the need.

3. You Don’t Need Big Budgets to Go Digital

Even small changes can have a big impact. Participants learned about free and low-cost tools — from using WhatsApp for customer service to building websites with AI support. The message was clear: digital progression is about being resourceful, not expensive.

4. AI Is a Tool, Not a Shortcut

AI tools like ChatGPT were a hot topic. The group shared best practices for using AI to refine ideas, save time, and boost communication — while maintaining a human and authentic voice. The emphasis was on using AI responsibly and strategically.

5. Digital Transformation is a Journey, Not a One-Off

The workshop closed with a reminder that digital advancement is an ongoing process. Christoff encouraged everyone to keep learning, keep testing, and keep sharing.

This workshop proved that no matter where you are on your digital journey, with the right tools, mindset, and support network digital transformation is possible.
