Matawi, which means ‘branches’ in Swahili, is a sustainable spirits company based in Cape Town, South Africa. Incorporated in 2018 following the worst drought the Western Cape had experienced in over a century, Matawi’s founders were motivated to bring to market a “future-proofed” alcohol brand: one with a lighter environmental impact, with the potential to generate income opportunities for historically disadvantaged communities, by preferentially procuring the natural ingredients used to craft Matawi's range from rural producers (with women and youth particularly prioritised), thereby contributing to the alleviation of poverty and inequality in South Africa.
